Every retail display starts as a material decision, and it's usually made before anyone has drawn a single bracket. Two substrates do most of the heavy lifting in permanent and semi-permanent fixtures: medium-density fiberboard — the warm, yellow-toned MDF stacked at any building-supply yard — and expanded PVC panel, sold under names like Sintra, Komatex, and Celtec. They behave nothing alike, and choosing wrong costs you in weight, longevity, or the story you get to tell your client about it.
(We'll set corrugate aside here. It has its place in short-run, ship-flat promotions, but it doesn't hold an edge or a finish the way these two do, and it isn't built for displays meant to live in a store for years.)
The case for MDF
MDF is dense, flat, and dead consistent — no knots, no grain to fight, no splintering. It routs to a crisp edge, takes paint and laminate like almost nothing else, and carries a heft that reads as premium the moment a shopper leans on it. For built-in millwork, endcaps, and fixtures that need to feel like furniture, it's hard to beat.

It also carries a sustainability story that surprises people. MDF is engineered wood — fiber that pulled carbon out of the atmosphere while the tree was growing and holds onto it for the life of the panel. Louisiana-Pacific's LP SmartSide, an engineered-wood siding, earned a carbon-negative Environmental Product Declaration: an independently validated life-cycle assessment confirmed it stores more carbon than its production and distribution release. MDF isn't the same product as siding — its resin binders and higher density change the math — but the core advantage is identical.
You're building out of sequestered carbon, not petroleum.
The case for PVC
Expanded PVC flips almost every one of those tradeoffs. It's a rigid, closed-cell foam that weighs a fraction of MDF, shrugs off moisture, and cuts, routes, drills, and solvent-welds with ordinary shop tools. Assembly is fast, the surface is a genuinely excellent print substrate, and a well-built PVC display survives being crated, shipped, set up, struck, and shipped again — exactly what you want for a traveling or reusable program. For durability across repeated handling, it outperforms lighter foam boards handily.

One of PVC's biggest hidden advantages is that PVC doesn't move much. Retail fixtures often fail because materials expand, swell, or telegraph humidity changes. PVC doesn't.
PVC's dimensional stability is one reason it performs so well in multi-location rollouts where displays are stored, shipped, and installed under wildly different environmental conditions.
From a cost perspective, a PVC display may cost more per sheet but less per deployed fixture once freight, handling, and installation labor are accounted for.
The asterisk is an environmental one, and it's the question most people get slightly wrong. Suppliers market panels like Komatex as "100% recyclable," and manufacturers do reclaim their own clean production scrap. But once a panel is printed, laminated, and glued into a finished display, municipal recycling streams almost never take it — and PVC sits on the Living Building Challenge's Red List of materials to avoid. So "recyclable" is technically true and practically limited. If a client is chasing a sustainability narrative, that's worth saying out loud rather than papering over.

So which one?
There's no universal winner — there's a right answer per project.
Reach for MDF when the display is permanent or fixed in place, weight isn't the enemy, and you want the warmth, the substantial feel, and a genuine sequestered-carbon story to hand the client.
Reach for PVC when the fixture has to travel, get handled repeatedly, live near moisture, or go up fast — and when shaving pounds off the crate matters more than a few degrees of premium heft.
The best fabricators don't have a favorite. They have a decision tree, and they can defend the pick in front of the client on cost, longevity, and sustainability alike. That's the difference between selling a display and building the right one.
